A Legacy in Puerto Rican Poetry and Cultural Activism
On Friday, April 3, 2026, Caridad De La Luz—widely known as La Bruja—marked a powerful milestone: 30 years since her first appearance reciting poetry at the legendary Nuyorican Poets Cafe. Over the past three decades, La Bruja has become a defining voice in Puerto Rican poetry, using her platform to uplift the community and advocate for critical issues including domestic violence awareness, social justice, and cultural preservation.
Today, she also serves as the Executive Director of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, continuing to nurture and elevate new generations of poets while preserving the institution’s historic legacy within the Puerto Rican and broader Latino arts community.
Her artistic journey spans multiple disciplines. She has been featured in numerous films, produced original music, and most recently earned an Emmy Award—further cementing her impact as a multidisciplinary artist and cultural leader. La Bruja’s work continues to resonate deeply within the Puerto Rican community and beyond, contributing to the evolving landscape of Latino poetry and performance art.
Having had the privilege of knowing, documenting, and collaborating with La Bruja since the early 1990s, I created a commemorative video compilation to honor this milestone. The piece highlights our shared projects as well as archival photographs from events that capture the richness of her career and contributions.
The celebration took place at the Bronx Music Hall, where La Bruja presented a compelling timeline of her artistic and activist journey. The evening concluded with the screening of this video tribute, helping to close out a historic moment in Bronx Puerto Rican poetry history.
